Musha - Santa Monica

Have you ever had Japanese cuisine without eating a plateful of sushi? Have you ever had Japanese tapas? (Probably not). At Musha you can get quality Japanese food, full of flavor and origination without order sushi, sashimi or any raw fish and rice combination.

Musha is like the Japanese version of The Melting Pot for those of you who are familiar. They have dishes that come with a little "grill" with hot stones (see picture) and you can grill the meat and veggies to your liking. There are tons of gluten free, non meat, non fish, and vegetarian/vegan options for the whole family!

Ebimayo - Musha's version of rock shrimp tempura, fried to perfection with a sweet and spicy mayo sauce! (Pictured)

Appetizer
Spicy Tuna Dip - served with rice cake crackers was light and delicious, the best part of a spicy tuna roll, without the roll! (Pictured)

Grill
The Shichirin is a modern table top charcoal grille. My friend and I ordered the Saikoro Steak, which is cube cut rib eye steak served with 2 different sauces (garlic soy steak sauce and ponzu sauce) - the steak was tender and juicy and the sauces went with not only the steak but everything else on the table! Decaf Vegan Delight!

Do you hate coffee? Are you a vegan? Do you like keeping a healthy diet? Do you love tea?

Argo Tea has an insane menu of teas, hot, cold and decaf. With scattered locations around NYC, the standard menu along with the seasonal menu flavors cannot be beat. The first time I went to Argo Tea was because of the “Irish Cream Tea Latte” poster that was hanging in the window. My friend Jaymelee and I walked by, then walked back and said we had to try it! It just sounded to good not to try! We left Argo Tea full of smiles. Delighting in the flavor of the tea while actually drinking something quite light. The customization of soy milk, whole milk, almond milk or skim milk allows you to customize to your liking.

In addition, their small bakery of quiche and muffins has some gluten free options for our gluten free friends! This place keeps getting better and better! For all nutritional information, you can check the link on their website! Nutritional Information Here

Foodie Rundown:
My personal favorite is the Green Tea Strawberry Cream (made with skim milk). This is naturally sweetened and delicious! Definitely has caffeine, but is delicious either hot or cold! You can also buy the loose tea and bring it home, which is fabulous!

Seasonal Irish Cream Tea Latte (made with skim milk) was my first ever tea from Argo. A life changing experience, if I must say so myself!

White Tea Acai Squeeze (cold)
Pom Tea (either hot or cold)

For the Side:
Longhorn Cheddar Mac & Cheese - I’m pretty sure everyone loves mac & cheese as a side, and if you don’t, well that’s just not good (pictured)

Babycakes

Is your diet refined sugar, gluten, wheat, soy, dairy or egg free?  Are you vegan or kosher?  If you answered yes to any of the previously mentioned allergies, you will LOVE Babycakes NYC.  This bakery is all of the above, and more.  They don't use any peanuts or nuts except coconut, so based off the food and drug administration stating that coconut is now a tree nut, they are not able to mention that they are nut free.  But if you are allergic to nuts, and not allergic to coconut, then you are in luck!  This place is definitely for you!

*Note - In the non gluten free items, Babycakes uses a flour called spelt which contains gluten. It is NOT recommended for those following a gluten/wheat free diet. Also, an individual with a wheat related condition (i.e. celiac sprue, gluten sensitive enteropathies, etc...) should not consume spelt flour.

Fatta Cuckoo

So tonight, my boyfriend and I had a dinner special that I found on Rue La La for a restaurant in the LES (lower east side) called Fatta Cuckoo.

Tonight, I think I found a new favorite restaurant in the city. Favorite for food and for its mom and pop style. It is a seasonal menu comprised of all local and organic foods and is almost an entirely gluten free menu! The food was outrageous, the service was great, an they have amazing specials and date nights for very affordable prices.

See schedule below:
Monday - closed
Tuesday- Date Night! $70 for a bottle of wine, shared appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 desserts!
Wednesday- $40 for 2 entrees and 2 cocktails!
Thursday- $40 for wine night at the bar! A cheese board for 2 and a bottle of Bordeaux
Friday- $7 cocktails after 10pm
Saturday- 1 entree and 3 cocktails for $20 bucks!

PEI Mussels - Prince Edward Island Mussels in a mango, yuzu, ginger and Thai chili broth over udon noodles and finished with fresh basil and scallions Mmmm mmmm good! (see picture)
Surf and Turf- as a foodie I know I have many favorites, but I do believe that this was one of the best meals I have ever had. The "surf" was succulent pan seared, an the "turf" was a boneless BBQ short rib. With 3 chills and a tomato and avocado salad between make this unique surf and turf 100% worth ever bite! Yardhouse

Guest post by Jenn Press Arata! -thank you!!
www.thatssojenn.com

I was very excited to check out Yard House's newest location at Palisades Center mall, that had only been open a few days before we arrived. The restaurant/bar boasts 130-250 taps of imported, craft and specialty ales and lagers.

The servers were still in training, yet eager to learn and very accommodating. We ordered many dishes and they were always quick to clear and ready to assist. Fun Fact: Yard House's beer glasses are cleaned separately from the food dishes to ensure their pure taste. If you aren't quite ready to order a yard (be aware that not all beers can be ordered in this size due to their high alcohol content), you can ask for up to two samples at a time to taste before you commit.

Allergy Info:

Very allergen friendly menu, including a whole section for Gardein options--a vegetarian chicken and beef meat substitute. There are also many 'gluten sensitive' options provided along with gluten-free beers. Everything is labeled making it easy to navigate, and the extensively varied menu offers something for everyone. An overall nutritional breakdown is available on their site as well.

Foodie Rundown:

For appetizers, the ahi poke bowl was precisely seasoned and didn't even require the soy sauce served on the side. The marinated raw ahi tuna was full of texture and crunch when prepared with avocado, carrots, bean sprouts, macadamia nuts & wontons. Can be made 'gluten sensitive' without the wantons and soy sauce or minus the macadamias if you have a nut allergy.

The deviled eggs topped with spicy tomato sauce, sweet chili sauce and minced chives were unlike any I've had before, and I can't wait to order them again. They offer a unique sweet and spicy kick for a perfectly satisfying appetizer bite! A must have for sure. (Vegetarian)

For entrees, I was excited to sample the many Gardein options. I tried the boneless buffalo chicken wings (you can also order them jerk or firecracker style) served authentically with celery sticks and ranch dipping sauce. They tasted so good, even the carnivores at the table had to clarify it was vegetarian. The chicken and avocado sandwich was also a hit, while the beef sliders were way more than your typical bulky veggie burger. I ordered the sliders two ways: classic with their house sauce and cheese and the other with fried onions and bearnaise sauce. What a treat! I upgraded to truffle fries which were shoestring thin, served in a cone and sprinkled with parmesan. Delish. Incredible selections for vegetarians to feel part of the action and enjoy hearty beer grub rather than a dainty salad. (Vegetarian)

Of the street tacos, we tried the asada (grilled new york steak with roasted pasilla peppers, pico de gallo and guacamole), baja fish (crispy white fish with lemon sriracha aĂŻoli, green cabbage, cilantro, pico de gallo and guacamole) and blackened swordfish (with green cabbage, cilantro, cumin crema, pico de gallo, guacamole and mango papaya chutney). Swordfish was impressive, but steer clear if you have a fish allergy!

Adult macaroni and cheese with playful campanelle pasta, chicken breast, applewood bacon, wild mushrooms, cheddar, parmesan and truffle oil was rich and decadent. Can be ordered from the Gardein menu with chicken substitute and no bacon. (Steer clear with dairy allergy).

This particular location was at Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, NY, but they have multiple locations throughout Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Virginia and Texas.

Travel Thursday - Hey Cupcake!

Guest Post by Gina Oliva – Thank you!

Today we’re traveling to Austin, Texas. Although Austin is weird, (if you’ve been you totally know the saying), but gourmet cupcakes are never weird especially at Hey Cupcake!

There are simple flavors ranging from Vanilla to Chocolate, to 24 Carrot and Michael Jackson. The best is that they offer gluten free options, such as Pina Colada. A tropical paradise for those who are gluten free! Oh and if you’re in the area, and you go to their website, or click on the link here (http://www.heycupcake.com/index.php), you can enter your email address for a FREE cupcake. Yes, I said FREE!

Allergy Info:
Gluten Free Cupcake Option

Foodie Rundown:
Pina Colada- Trying to fit in with the Austin mentality of fitness and healthy eating, I choose a Gluten Free cupcake after a delicious dinner at South Congress CafĂ© across the street. I was not expecting much, just that I would not feel as bad for my decision to say “Screw It” and eat a cupcake. It was well worth it. Hands down no one would have known it was gluten free. After taking my first bite, my second bite was even better. To my surprise the cupcake was filled with pineapples to make the cupcake even moister. The only deduction was that the icing was super sweet. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth (would rather eat another bowl of pasta than dessert ;)), so I would have preferred more of a cream cheese frosting, such as the one they have on their delicious red velvet cupcakes, which are not gluten free. The Pina Colada cupcake was as close as I could get to pretending I was on a beach and a great example of how eating gluten free does not always match up with the stereotypes associated with it.

Gluten Free Party!

So last night, I went to a restaurant called Risotteria with my friend who eats all gluten free due to dietary restrictions. She has a difficult time finding restaurants that have enough gluten free options. Well, FEAR NO MORE! As Risotteria strives to be 100% gluten free! Not only will you not feel like you’re eating gluten free, you will eat bread, pizza, panini’s and even cupcakes that are all 100% gluten free.

Being that I don’t have to eat gluten free, this place is great for people who have friends or spouses that can’t eat gluten. The food is outrageous, fresh and tastes like normal bread and carb-like gluten filled items.

Allergy Info:
100% Gluten Free

Foodie Rundown:
Gluten Free Pizza - Pesto with Zucchini and sundried tomatoes – yummy! Small pie to share as an appetizer was a great idea!
Risotto with prosciutto, scallions and fontina cheese (pictured)
Risotto with mushrooms (pictured)
Peanut Butter fudge cupcake – this was so tasty! The frosting tasted like chocolate / peanut butter heaven with a rich chocolate cake bottom (pictured)
Gluten Free Ciabatta bread, for sale at the front desk (they also sell: chocolate chip cookies, black and white cookies and a fake twinkie – all which are gluten free!)
Gluten free wines and beer! (the gluten free beer is of course the most exciting for gluten – free friends!)

Location:
Bleeker between 6th and 7th

Make sure to check out their website for more details on the menu and other items for sale. Remember, they do not take reservations, and cannot sit more than 6 people at a table. The restaurant is small, so come with a big appetite and get there early!

Bagel Magic

So before I rave about all the allergy friendly options here, the innovativeness, and the absolutely pure genius of providing a “salad” type bar for your cream cheese mix ins, this place is a goldmine.

Vic’s Bagel Bar has over 15 types of fresh bagels that will be sure to delight your hangover on Sunday morning. The whole wheat everything bagel will never disappoint, and for those who are more carb conscious, the whole wheat everything Flagel (a flat bagel) will give you all the satisfaction of eating a carb filled bagel.

Moving onto the cream cheese. The cream cheese bar, is by far, the best part of Vics Bagel Bar. Choose your base, regular, low, or no fat cream cheese. And choose mix ins from the following :
Take big breath now!
Bananas
Carrots
basil
sprinkles
raisins
cucumber
dill
chocolate chips
tomatoes
broccoli
parsley
potato chips
red onion
corn
cilantro
kosher bacon bits
green peppers
chickpeas
scallions
strawberries
pesto
wasabi
za'atar

mangoes
black olives

walnuts
sundried
capers
cheddar
cheese
cashews
tomatoes
avocado
bacon
Chopped lox
grilled chicken

Ok so from all of these mix-ins you can put into your cream cheese, you can have a different customized bagel anytime you go Vics. The best news? Is that they now offer a GLUTEN FREE BAGEL!

Oh, did I mention that they deliver? So if you’re hungover and can’t leave your apartment, order 2 bagels to meet the delivery threshold (yes, I’ve done this before), freeze a bagel and eat the other!
